Holmes & Yang + Valextra = Homerun

With their first entry into the handbag forum, Holmes & Yang have created the thinking woman's no-brainer: a forever investment piece that addresses everyday practical concerns while turning heads.
Valextra, the Italian luxury house, has supplied top-quality materials and workmanship to the project, while Holmes & Yang have brought a fresh, easy American style sensibility and a highly-developed sense of function. The first bags spent six months in development, according to Yang, and the investment has paid off: The result is a smart shape (the tapering at the top keeps the large bag from looking blocky and makes for a comfortable fit under the arm), distinguished coloring, and an interior space that defies even the most determined disorganizer.
In fact, the team seems to have designed the bag almost from the inside out. At their trunk show today at Barney's in Beverly Hills, Yang couldn't wait to display the inner workings: the built-in pockets for lip gloss (or keys), makeup compact and phone; the center compartment for an iPad; the spaces for a wallet and any other sizeable essential (which, for Yang, might be a pair Alaia stilettos for seamless day-to-night--or coast-to-coast transitions).
The largest size (40cm) could serve as an overnight bag, a briefcase, or an everyday carryall. As roomy as a Birkin, it is much lighter and made with double shoulder straps for maximum functionality. This is a top-quality luxury bag made for a woman who has important things to do and needs her arms free to do them--whether she is opening her own door or carrying her children or shopping for her groceries or shaking the hands of her constituents.
The middle size (35cm) comes with a cross-body strap and the smallest, a clutch, will be available in a burgundy color.

Botkier x Lake Bell for Oxfam

I love any excuse to buy a cute bag, but supporting Oxfam is a great one! The collaboration of the "Lake Satchel is a natural fit; Lake Bell's downtown-cool vibe jives with Monica Botkier's urban-chic bags. Buttery caramel suede is juxtaposed with smooth cocoa leather - so enticing I don't know if I want to eat it or carry it! With a generous 50% of the proceeds from the bag going towards the poverty-fighting organization, it's a win-win purchase. Get yourself to ShopBop today and treat yourself to a good deed - and a new go-to satchel. If that's not a great ending to the week, I don't know what is.
On ShopBop for $495.

Tod's Cartella Medium Top Handled Messenger Bag: The Love Affair Continues

Tod's_fashion_cartella_medium_top_handle_bag.jpgicon
Each season, like clockwork, Tod's steals my heart. This time around, it's Tod's "Cartella" bag. Where to begin? A blend of styles (a hint of doctor bag, part ladylike purse), you can carry it top-handled or messenger-style, take your pick. A bag 13" wide is the most flattering and often most stylish size for anyone - short, tall, young, mature. It just works. Structured to perfection: it sits so perkily (on protective metal feet) and hangs off the wrist or shoulder with ease, while the large outer flap pocket adds interest and functionality. Did I mention this is perfect for summer? The color brings to mind pink sandy beaches and scoops of buttery ice cream. You can color me smitten. This is a "need, want, must have" situation. At Saks Fifth Avenueicon for $1,845.
Pair with: Um, anything? But it would look (especially) lovely with 3.1 Philip Lim's mouse-gray satin-twill blazer, double-breasted for a cool menswear look and in a color that brings out the "Cartella." On Net-a-Porter for $675.
